Contact thermometers are often used for a better temperature indication. This is a safer method than the back of the hand, but comparable with regard to safety. For places that are dangerous and difficult to reach, infrared thermometers are often used. Infrared thermometers, however, measure the average temperature of an area and for accurate measurements, the user must often be close to the machine. Thermography makes heat visible. A thermal camera converts the infrared radiation of the machine into a visual image.

The different temperatures are indicated in different colors or grayscale. Thermal cameras allow comparison of temperatures across a wide area, allowing to detect troublesome and critical spots quickly. If the cost of a thermal camera is offset against the savings due to less downtime and maintenance costs, the camera is recovered in a short period of time.
